Feature & Follow (7)

It's that time of the week again, time for Parajunkee and Alison Can Reads blog hop! This week the question is.... drumroll please.......

Q: Have you ever bought a book BECAUSE of a bad review?

Actually, a book I just read, Pieces of Us by Margie Gelbwasser, recieved alot of hate because of the heavy, descriptive subject matter.  I read alot of reviews where people gave it 1 star and said it shouldn't be in the YA genre and that it is disgusting and over the top.  So, I had to read it with my own eyes, and I LOVED it. Yes, it dealt with some pretty heavy subject matter, it described alot of very uncomfortable situations and it was really heavy on the language.  But it drew emotions out of me, I felt sad, at no point in time was I happy or hopeful, but I was super emotional because of it.  I still think about it, and I think I will for a long time to come.  You can read my review of Pieces of Us here.

I also want to add, that I am really very hesitant about picking up books that have rave reviews.  I find that the books everyone loves and gives 5 stars too I am disappointed by.  I don't know if it is because I go into it with too high of expectations, but I always seem to be let down.

So what about you? I love this question and am so excited to see everyones answers! Leave me a link, I always stop by :)

  1. I agree! I'm always much more hesitant to pick up a book if it gets a ton of rave reviews; not every book is perfect so I like to see some differing opinions thrown in.

  2. I'll never NOT read a book because of bad reviews, though I've started some and realized exactly why they got the reviews they did. And it's so true that reading a rave review can set up disappointment later on. O_o

    Thanks for stopping by!

  8. Hah, now that you've talked about the book I need to check it out, especially because these types of reviews make me want to read books very often, too. I want to decide for myself. :)

My Answer: No, Reviews matter a lot to me. Not unless the book became controversial that I would really feel the need to read that book.

  11. I agree with you. Not all books are going to be loved by everyone so deciding not to read something based on a single review just seems silly.

  13. I've had the same problem with going into books with SUPER high expectations because of all the crazy good reviews and then being disappointed. Delirium was like that for me. So now I try to avoid most reviews before reading a book, because I find I usually like them better if I'm not expecting them to be WOW SO AMAZING, you know?

  14. You never know! Differences in opinion can be pretty vast sometimes. I usually have a bigger problem with the books that everybody else loves - whereas I end up hating. I don't think I've found any that the majority didn't like and I totally loved. But then again, I've been going for a lot that have high ratings on Goodreads. Maybe that's my problem...

  18. Hi, New follower on Goodreads and GFC. I don't let bad reviews influence my reading a book because there have been books that some hated and I absolutely loved!! I just wouldn't intentionally set out and buy a book just because of a bad review.
